ICE showed ‘medical indifference’ to detainees amid COVID-19 pandemic
U.S. District Judge Jesus G. Bernal granted ICE detainee Faour Abdallah Fraihat and others their emergency motion to be certified as a subclass, and their motion for preliminary injunction to have ICE implement protections against COVID-19 in its facilities nationwide, which includes training medical personnel and monitor high risk detainees to release them. Bernal’s order noted that 14,000 out of 31,709 detainees have no criminal history or charges.




A federal judge has given immigration enforcement officials 10 days to identify detainees at high risk from COVID 19 and make custody determinations or release them, regardless of whether they filed formal requests to be released.
