Lawsuit filings have significantly dropped across the state

In many courts, a backlog is building due to cases having been filed but not processed. Kern County has seen a 350% drop in civil filings — from 2,118 to 471 — compared to the same time period last year, the court said.

Lawsuit filings have significantly dropped since the shutdown in counties across California, according to statistics provided to the Daily Journal. But even among superior courts that still allow filings, some are not processing the paperwork due to a lack of a fully functioning workforce.

A few counties have stopped accepting any new filings. Others did not provide statistics, citing bare bones resources and legal reasons.
