El Dorado County, overloaded with complex criminal cases, suspends civil trials for a year

“Once we are able to begin jury trials, we will have to start with criminal cases, which are entitled to statutory priority,” explained Presiding Judge Suzanne N. Kingsbury.

A large inventory of murder and complex sexual assault cases paired with an understaffed bench and limited court space has caused El Dorado County Superior Court to suspend all civil trials until 2021.

The court will work through this backlog of criminal trials as soon as the state of emergency is lifted before shifting its attention to civil trials.
