Facebook wants high court to end dispute over subpoenas
Criminal defendants should be barred from subpoenaing social media companies for private user content without exhausting alternatives, a Facebook attorney argued to the California Supreme Court Tuesday.




SAN FRANCISCO -- Criminal defendants should be barred from subpoenaing social media companies for private user content without exhausting alternatives, a Facebook attorney argued to the California Supreme Court Tuesday.
Company lawyer Joshua Lipshutz said doing so would resolve tensions in federal law prohibiting such companies from disclosing user posts and a criminal defendant's constitutional right to that evidence.
