Proposed legislation aims to diversify state’s jury pools

Wiener’s bill would change existing laws governing jury pool selection to include state tax filers in the list of sources counties can use to subpoena jurors.

A fresh proposal to expand jury pools to be more racially and socioeconomically diverse is being considered by the Legislature because the author used the gut-and-amend process to get around a deadline for non-fiscal bills to pass policy committees.

Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, rebranded Senate Bill 592, which was introduced in the Assembly in May 2019 to eliminate zoning and land use requirements for housing developments.
