Chinese researcher at Stanford freed on bond in visa case

U.S. Magistrate Judge Sallie Kim said she was not persuaded by prosecutors' claims that the woman was part of a scheme a Chinese military research institution to send scientists to the United States under false pretenses to steal intellectual property.

SAN FRANCISCO -- A Chinese woman conducting research at Stanford University was freed on bond Tuesday despite a last-minute move by prosecutors to detain her on charges she lied about her connections to the People's Liberation Army.
