Ruling on Uber, Lyft could impact other gig apps, lawyers say

Monday’s ruling explicitly rejected an argument the companies have long made: They do not employ drivers, but are rather technology companies that simply provide an app drivers and passengers can use to find each other.

A San Francisco judge's ruling that giving rides to passengers is not outside of Uber's and Lyft's usual course of business could have ramifications for other companies that connect customers and service providers through an app, since many have relationships with service providers that mirror the one the rideshare giants have with their drivers, stakeholders say.
