Group says charter cities can pass new soda taxes despite legislated moratorium

Gov. Jerry Brown signed the Keep Groceries Affordable Act in 2018, which banned all new local taxes on beverages with added sugar until 2031.

A Fresno community group sued the state, claiming that charter cities can pass new soda taxes despite a statewide moratorium. Several cities have passed such taxes in recent years to fight obesity and related health problems.
