Demand has increased for cities to hire law firms to investigate police shootings

Attorneys familiar with the practice of cities tapping private firms to do these investigations say there is a long precedent for doing so in California.

Demands for cities to hire independent investigators to scrutinize the conduct and policies of their police departments have increased in the months since George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police, especially in Vallejo, where the district attorney has refused to investigate two high-profile police shootings and asked the attorney general to do so.
