Murderer seeking release citing virus has been denied evaluation, lawyers say
Prison officials were ordered on Friday by a 1st District Court of Appeal panel to transfer Ivan Von Staich from his shared cell in the West Block of San Quentin, but Staich is asking to be immediately released, arguing the state has violated his Eighth Amendment rights by consciously disregarding the threat of the virus at San Quentin.




Attorneys representing a convicted Orange County murderer who contracted the coronavirus at San Quentin State Prison are expected to file briefs today arguing their client has been denied medical evaluations on multiple occasions by the state prison department, potentially costing him a court-ordered release he is seeking.
