Newsom endorses challenger in LA DA race where both candidates are Democrats

Newsom, who as mayor of San Francisco tapped Gascon to lead the city’s police department and to succeed then-DA Kamala Harris, cited Gascon’s “track record of getting results” in his endorsement. LA County DA Jackie Lacey, who took office in December 2012, is the first woman and African-American to lead the nation’s largest DA’s office, where she has worked since the 1980s.

In the Los Angeles district attorney election that pits two Democrats against each other, Gov. Gavin Newsom has endorsed the challenger, former San Francisco DA George Gascon, over incumbent LA County DA Jackie Lacey.
