Utilities commission says director placed on leave for performance issues

The state utilities commission is fighting back outgoing executive director Alice Stebbins' threat to pursue litigation for wrongful, retaliatory termination. Stebbins alleged earlier this month she is being ousted after whistleblowing so much of the Commission's wrongdoing the last several years. The CPUC has hired prominent public entity firm Liebert Cassidy Whitmore to defend them in the potential litigation. The CPUC, through counsel, sent letters to Stebbins' attorney on Tuesday, including hundreds of email correspondences they say will show that nobody schemed to fire Stebbins for the reasons she alleged. The CPUC argued Stebbins herself had questionable conduct, like hiring and promoting unqualified workers and approving salary hikes.

The executive director of the California Public Utilities Commission was placed on leave because of performance issues, not retaliation for whistleblowing, the agency said in a letter to her lawyer.

Alice Stebbins threatened earlier this month to sue the commissioners after being placed on administrative leave. She said the agency was retaliating over efforts to reform what she called a broken system mired in illegal closed meetings...
