State legislative session ends in late night drama, and half the bills passed last year

In the end, just over 400 bills ended up on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk. By contrast, Newsom signed 870 bills last year and vetoed another 172.

Late night drama is fairly typical at the end of a California Legislature session. But little went according to plan during the most unusual lawmaking session in years.

The highest profile piece of legislation — an eviction protection bill — passed shortly before midnight and was signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom soon afterward.
