Tribe sues governor over negotiations in gambling contracts

The lawsuit claims Gov. Gavin Newsom is trying to force the tribe to accept a wide range of state policies including environmental and labor laws, as well as payments to a state gaming fund.

The Bishop Paiute Tribe has sued Gov. Gavin Newsom, alleging he violated the terms of the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act in negotiations for a tribal compact. This is one of several pending cases being filed as tribal gambling compacts signed around 1999 begin to expire.
