Reed Smith partner in command for campers’ rescue

As part of the leadership to manage operations, Col. Jesse Miller helped determine the only way to evacuate the campers was through a daring air rescue mission.

Reed Smith partner Jesse Miller had just returned home for Labor Day weekend after a five-month deployment with the National Guard when he got a call.

The Creek Fire, which sparked on Sept. 4, had exploded to 56 square miles and cornered hundreds of people near Shaver Lake in Fresno County. Miller was needed.
