Newsom vetoes arbitration extension for state supervisors

Newsom returned Senate Bill 179 on Friday, writing, "Expanding the right to arbitrate to state managers and supervisors will result in increased costs not contemplated in the 2020 Budget at a time when the state is facing massive cost pressures due to the COVID-19 pandemic."

The challenge of predicting arbitration costs moved Gov. Gavin Newsom to reject a bill that would have allowed some state supervisory employees to resolve disputes through binding arbitration, he said in a veto letter. The bill saw little opposition in the Legislature.
