Governor signs package of bills to aid farmworkers

The passage of Assembly Bill 2043, authored by Assemblymember Robert Rivas, D-Hollister, was viewed as a significant victory by advocates for farmworkers, who say those laborers continue to contract COVID-19 at high rates relative to workers in other industries.

Bills aimed at bolstering COVID-19 safety protocols for farmworkers, expanding employment protections for victims of crime and abuse, changing existing sick leave laws, and boosting the state labor commissioner's role were among many signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom shortly before his deadline Wednesday.
