Governor hints misdemeanor diversion bill will be amended
Gov. Gavin Newsom said he didn't agree defendants convicted of driving under the influence should be granted diversion and will approach the Legislature about it next year.
Gov. Gavin Newsom eased some concerns of prosecutors in signing a bill that will allow judges to grant diversion for almost all misdemeanors, hinting it will be amended next year to exclude driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
In a letter to members of the State Assembly after signing AB 3234 Wednesday, Newsom said he didn't agree defendants convicted of that offense should be granted diversion.
