Newsom is 1st governor to file amicus brief in capital appeal

A spokesperson for Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who is prosecuting the case, said he will “continue to work with Gov. Newsom and his team on reforming and strengthening our criminal justice system for all.”

For the first time in state history a sitting governor has argued in court filings that the death penalty is unfair and unevenly applied to people of color.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has long opposed the death penalty, filed an amicus curiae brief with the state Supreme Court on Monday in support of death row prisoner Donte McDaniel's appeal of his sentence. People v. McDaniel, S171393 (Cal. S. Ct, filed Aug. 6, 2015)
