Justices are responsible for staff’s online comments that violate rules

The Committee on Judicial Ethics Opinions stated that a justice should take immediate steps to remedy the ethical violation when the justice becomes aware of the comments.

According to new advice from a state Supreme Court committee, an appellate justice must instruct staff members to delete any online comments that violate the court's ethics rules.

The Committee on Judicial Ethics Opinions issued the oral advice last week after receiving a request for guidance on what ethical obligations justices have if a staff member makes inappropriate comments online.
