Legislators aim to rein in governor, prevent evictions in 1st bills of new session
The tumultuous events of 2020 will set the agenda, at least in the early going. For Republicans, that will mean trying to convince their Democratic colleagues to defy an increasingly embattled governor.




Lawmakers introduced measures to rein in Gov. Gavin Newsom’s emergency powers and fend off a potential wave of evictions on the first day of the 2021 legislative session.
With many legislative battles put off this year because of the pandemic, most expect the coming session to be far more active. But the 164 bills introduced Monday were a pretty typical number for the first legislative day after an election.
