Trends in state privacy laws: Is it time for a federal law?
California led the nation in consumer privacy when it enacted the California Consumer Privacy Act in 2018, establishing the first overarching data privacy modeled after the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation. Californians expanded the scope of these protections when it passed the California Privacy Rights Act in November 2020, which takes effect in 2023.
