9th Circuit panel revives asylum bid for nurse who said cartels threatened her
The immigration appeals board had denied her appeal, comparing her claim to that of taxi drivers from El Salvador who sought asylum. It ruled that being a female nurse, like a taxi driver, wasn’t an immutable characteristic.




Reversing the Board of Immigration Appeals, a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel on Friday revived the asylum bid of a Mexican nurse who claimed she was threatened if she did not treat injured drug cartel members.
Mariela Plancarte Sauceda and her young son will get another chance at asylum after the appellate panel remanded their case for asylum and relief under the Convention Against Torture.
