Panel tosses murder convictions, says juror strike ‘tied to race’
During jury selection, the defendants filed Batson/Wheeler motions against the prosecutor’s exercise of a peremptory strike against three Black prospective jurors, including a 25-year-old woman who said she supported Black Lives Matter.




An appellate court overturned the convictions of three men in a murder case after finding the prosecutor's reason for striking a juror was "plainly tied to race."
The case involved four Black members of a San Francisco street gang who were being tried for crimes related to the murders of Christopher Zinn and Brieanna Dow, who were also Black. The trial started in 2016.
