High court names 1st Latina criminal central staff director

Jessica Barber will take over in 2022 from Norm Vance, who is retiring after 29 years as director.

The California Supreme Court named Jessica Barber as the next director of Criminal Central Staff, the first Latina in the job.

Barber will become director on Jan. 3, 2022, replacing Norm Vance, who is retiring after 29 years as the staff’s director.

The Criminal Central Staff handles review and habeas corpus petitions in criminal matters, excluding capital cases.
