Governor enters dispute between Berkeley and its neighbors

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s amicus was filed a day after Save Berkeley’s Neighborhoods filed its opposition to UC Berkeley’s attempt to overturn an enrollment limit that was imposed by the court, due to concerns from the community about increasing student enrollment without adequate housing to accommodate them.

Gov. Gavin Newsom filed an amicus brief late Friday in Save Berkeley's Neighborhoods v. Regents of the University of California -- a case before the state Supreme Court due to an earlier judgment that required the university to freeze its student enrollment at 2020-2021 levels.

"We can't let a lawsuit get in the way of the education and dreams of thousands of students who are our future leaders and innovators," said Newsom.
