Juror pay is biggest barrier to diversity, work group finds

Specifically, the Ad-Hoc Workgroup on Post Pandemic Initiatives found that increasing juror per diems would create access to the judicial system for low-income citizens who are unable to afford the basic costs associated with jury service such as transportation, loss of a day’s income or child care.

Compensation is the biggest barrier to diversifying juries in California, a coalition created by the Judicial Council of California said Wednesday.

An interim report by the Ad-Hoc Workgroup on Post Pandemic Initiatives, issued Wednesday, recommends an increase to juror per diems as the first step toward creating juries that adequately represent their respective communities.
