The 94th Academy Awards were overshadowed Sunday the moment Will Smith walked up to the podium, not to receive the award for best actor, as he did later in the show, but to strike presenter Chris Rock for making a joke at his wife’s expense.

The Los Angeles Police Department promptly issued a statement saying it would have to wait for a complaint from the victim to start any formal inquiries.
