
Ellis J. Horvitz
Ellis J. Horvitz didn't invent appellate law. But to hear some who knew him tell it, he may have invented the appellate law firm.
"Ellis was really the dean of the appellate bar," said retired California Supreme Court justice Ming W. Chin, now with ADR Services Inc. "He was the gold standard."
Horvitz died March 22, weeks shy of his 94th birthday.
