Southern California DA races are few but contentious

The Orange County district attorney’s race has been the most contentious. DA Todd Spitzer, who defeated a 20-year incumbent in 2018, promising to clean up the office after a series of scandals, faces two challengers, former deputy DAs who have criticized his running of the office and accused him of making racist remarks in a staff discussion about charges in a double murder case.

Only four Southern California counties are electing district attorneys this year, but there are 12 candidates, several of whom have traded bitter, pointed, and accusatory campaign arguments.
