Who protects privacy better? Government or tech companies?

In February, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee passed the Open App Markets Act, aimed at Apple and Google. It would prevent companies from giving preference to their own products and force them to allow customers to download software from third-party developer websites instead of directly from app stores.

Who will do a better job protecting privacy, government or the private sector? Two of the most visible figures in the digital privacy arena gave their competing visions of privacy in the digital age at a conference in the nation’s capital this week.
