Bankrupt ex-lawyer says he need not reimburse State Bar for client payments
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Ernest M. Robles ruled in June 2021 that the debt could not be discharged as it was a penalty imposed to punish and rehabilitate attorneys, rather than compensation for actual loss.




A bankrupt and disbarred attorney asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday to rule that he is not required to reimburse $2 million that the California State Bar used to repay clients whom he defrauded.
