$137M award to Black Tesla worker reduced to $13.5M

U.S. District Judge William Orrick wrote in his 43-page decision that the permitted punitive damages award is nine times the amount of compensatory damages.

A federal judge upheld a jury’s verdict against Tesla in a lawsuit brought by a Black former employee who alleged discrimination, but reduced the award from $137 million to $13.5 million, calling it “unconstitutionally large.”
