Orange County agrees to jail reforms for disabled and LGBTQ inmates

Disability Rights California reached a settlement with the county and the sherriff’s department. The plan addresses issues affecting LGBTQ inmates, disabled inmates, and solitary confinement laws.

Orange County agreed to several reforms following an investigation by Disability Rights California, the remedial plan to include changes to LGBTQ treatment, disability treatment, and solitary confinement rules.

One of the changes will come in the form of a specialized housing unit for LGBTQ people. The unit will include a pilot program with specialized programming tailored to LGBTQ issues, something not previously available at the jail. <...
