Bill would require lawyers to opt in to support State Bar’s lobbying

The move comes after several months in which the agency has sparred with the leaders of the Judiciary committees in each house over the agency’s priorities and spending on consultants.

A provision in the State Bar annual dues bill would require attorneys to opt in to support the agency’s lobbying effort.

If most attorneys don’t choose to contribute, the bar could lose hundreds of thousands of dollars annually and, potentially, some of its ability to influence state lawmakers. Meanwhile, the bar said it has ended a pair of consulting contracts that drew unfavorable attention from lawmakers last year.
