Nonlawyers cannot form or run a law firm, State Bar group decides

Gregory Fortescue, lead attorney at the state Supreme Court, said during a Wednesday meeting: “Paraprofessionals can be employees … they can form a partnership. But we have to remove the term ‘lawyer.’ … They cannot form a firm without a lawyer.”

The California Paraprofessional Program Working Group has decided against a resolution prepared by State Bar staff that would have allowed nonattorneys to form, own, or exercise authority in law firms.
