Suicide rate at Monterey jail ‘extremely problematic,’ attorney says

“These are inmates with mental health issues and previous attempts or ideation, and nevertheless are placed in an isolated cell with hanging points and under no supervision,” Elise R. Sanguinetti of Arias Sanguinetti Wang Torrijos LLP.

The family of an inmate who was found dead in an isolated cell has filed a complaint against the Monterey County Jail, its medical staff, and Sheriff James Bass’ office, arguing negligence and failure to provide medical care. It follows two similar cases within the facility.
