No judge quotes as blurbs on book covers, says judicial ethics committee
“In contrast to academic review or critique, book cover endorsements are typically used to help market or promote book sales,” said 4th District Court of Appeal Justice Judith L. Haller. “It’s problematic for a judge to provide a book cover endorsement because the judge’s position is being leveraged for commercial purposes, which is not allowed under the Code of Judicial Ethics.”




Book reviews are OK, but no cover blurbs, the state Supreme Court Committee on Judicial Ethics Opinions said in guidance for judges Thursday.
A judge may review, critique, or comment on legal education books or writings in legal publications for educational purposes related to the law, the legal system, or the administration of justice, but cannot make any blurb or statement to be used on the book’s cover.
