UCLA settles last group of sex abuse suits, total nears $700M
There were two prior rounds of settlements in cases involving Heaps, a $243.6 million settlement of more than 200 lawsuits and a $73 million settlement to resolve a class action with more than 5,000 members. The cases allege Heaps sexually abused patients during examinations from 1983 until his arrest in 2019.




UCLA agreed Tuesday to settle for $374 million sex abuse lawsuits by 312 former patients of a campus doctor, bringing the total for most of the cases to almost $700 million.
The settlements for the actions of Dr. James Heaps, who faces multiple criminal charges are the largest amount for sexual abuse involving a public university.
