Hastings board meets today to consider name change

A series of newspaper stories linked the school’s founder and namesake, Serranus C. Hastings, to organizing militias that conducted massacres against Indian tribes in rural northern California.

UC Hastings College of the Law held its 141st commencement ceremony on May 22. It may be the school’s last under that name.

On Friday, the school’s board of directors will meet to discuss a name change. That meeting comes one week after the California Senate shelved SB 1288, one of two name change bills that had been working their way through the Legislature. Lawmakers have united behind the Assembly’s measure, AB 1936.
