Governor signs bill extending 29 tribes’ gaming compacts

Of the 29 tribes named, at least 16 have sued the state over allegations the administration has failed to negotiate in good faith. Attorneys for the tribes say Newsom has tried to force tribes to enforce several state environmental and labor laws.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a bill extending gaming compacts for 29 California Indian tribes — including several who have sued him over compact negotiations.

SB 898 ratified amendments reached earlier this year to extend each compact by 18 months, to Jan. 1, 2023. Each of the 20-year deals was first signed in 1999 and would have run out Dec. 31, 2020. They were automatically extended by 18 months when the tribes failed to agree on a longe...
