Judge sued over his defense of man falsely accused of rape

“I do not denigrate public defenders. I have at least some awareness of their pressure, but the fact is it’s never an excuse for malpractice,” said Janice M. Bellucci, attorney for Jermaine Dickerson.

A man wrongly convicted of rape in 1998 sued Contra Costa County — and the judge who once represented him as a public defender.

Jermaine Dickerson is seeking damages for what he said was Judge David E. Goldstein’s failure to properly defend him. Goldstein was a deputy public defender in Contra Costa County from 1995 to 2015, when Gov. Jerry Brown appointed him to the bench.
