Supreme Court rejects challenges to pandemic trial delays

In 2 criminal cases, defendants asked the state Supreme Court to grant relief citing speedy trial laws. In one case, Justice Goodwin H. Liu said he would have heard the case but no other justice agreed.

The California Supreme Court rejected speedy trial act challenges to delays in criminal trials during the pandemic, affirming rulings that the delays were attributable to the exceptional circumstances.

Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye and Justice Carol Corrigan were recused from both decisions issued Wednesday because they sit on the Judicial Council that made decisions regarding delays.
