Sacramento must help homeless escape heat, suit says

Plaintiffs want authorities to declare a state of emergency whenever temperatures reach 90 degrees, and open 20 cooling centers for 24 hours a day.

A group representing unhoused people are locked in a court dispute with local governments in Sacramento over cooling centers.

According to the complaint and motion for a temporary restraining order it filed last month, neither the City nor County of Sacramento have provided sufficient resources for vulnerable people during recent heat waves. The County responded by arguing it complies with state law.
