League of Women Voters challenges cities’ lobbying laws
"That would enable council members themselves or their allies to sue their critics for speaking out against them or encouraging others to do so," wrote Jamie L. "It would give powerful people who can afford lawyers the ability to file Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation ("SLAPP") to chill or punish their critics."




The League of Women Voters of Cupertino-Sunnyvale sued the City of Cupertino over a lobbying ordinance they claim is so "overbroad" it could ensnare ordinary citizens. The complaint also cites the mayor's recent suggestion to add a private right of action to the ordinance.
