Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye won’t seek retention
“It’s not an easy decision. I still have anxiety over it,” said Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye. “I have accomplished much and started the ball rolling on many things of interest to us as a branch in service of the public. Now is a good time. The branch is in a solid, sustainable place.”




Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who took the leadership of the California judiciary in 2010 at a time of deep budget cuts, weathered pandemic related shutdowns and case backlogs and now enjoys a record budget for the next fiscal year, said Wednesday she will not seek retention in November.
Her decision allows Gov. Gavin Newsom to replace her in January.
