Disbarred, bankrupt lawyer needn’t repay State Bar client security fund

“The case was actually one that goes back to whether or not debt is dischargeable even when a government entity such as the State Bar requires restitution, with respect to the payment of claims made by victims” of Anthony J. Kassas, said his attorney, Matthew D. Resnik.

A disbarred attorney need not reimburse the State Bar $2 million for its Client Security Fund for payments to his defrauded clients because the amount can be discharged in bankruptcy, a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel determined.
