Sweeping state plans to respond to drought provides opportunity for water lawyers

“As we’re having all these new issues, it’s actually a time when the first generation of water lawyers in the West are retiring in great numbers, so there’s a demand among firms for new graduates who have water law expertise or who want to develop water law expertise in a way that has not been true for most of my teaching career,” professor Robin C. Craig of the USC Gould School of Law said.

As Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled a sweeping plan Thursday to adapt the state’s residents to sustained drought, law schools across California have been preparing future attorneys for the unique water law challenges they will litigate, regulate or legislate, including issues of access, preservation and equality.
