Debate ensues over Newsom’s intent to nominate judge to state Supreme Court
Gov. Gavin Newsom says he intends to nominate Kelli Evans to the high court later, so she won’t have to stand for retention in November. Some observers say he can’t do that. Meanwhile, one prominent legal activist lashed out at Newsom for not nominating a Latino.




Gov. Gavin Newsom’s nomination of Patricia Guerrero as California’s next chief justice, and his intention to appoint Alameda County Superior Court Judge Kelli Evans as associate justice, has stirred legal and political debates.
The Commission on Judicial Appointments will consider Guerrero’s nomination as chief justice on Aug. 26, and she will be on the November ballot for voters to approve or reject.
