Lawmakers appear to nix State Bar sandbox plan — for now
Sen. Tom Umberg “and I met with the State Bar earlier this month to try and address their concerns with the bill, while still ensuring that the bar is laser-focused on overhauling its failing discipline system. We came away from those meetings more convinced than ever that the bar needs to focus on fixing its discipline system.…,” said Assemblyman Mark Stone, chairman of the Assembly Judiciary Committee.
State lawmakers have declared a checkmate in a monthslong dispute about the direction of the California State Bar.
Amendments added on Thursday to the agency's annual dues bill would put a two-year halt on "the State Bar exploring a regulatory sandbox." This refers to a set of ideas such as increasing the availability of legal services software and weakening prohibitions on non-attorneys owning legal services providers.
